A Growing Concern |
Junki and Linda Yoshida moved their family to Troutdale, Oregon in the fall of 1993. Every summer thereafter, they witnessed
rescue helicopters flying up and down the Sandy River in front of their home, scouting for drowning victims.
Rather than ignore the loss of two lives each year, they expelled on the merit and value of taking preventative
measures. In 1999, they organized the Troutdale Booster Club and together with Mayor Paul Thalhofer's assistance,
they enlisted the aid of American Medical Response. By providing joint funding, which is a free benefit
to the citizens and visitors to the region, a river rescue program was created as a public service project.
Thanks to the presence of lifeguards, an average of 35 people are rescued or assisted each year and no lives
have been needlessly lost on the Sandy River at Glenn Otto Park. |

After experiencing the loss of family members, friends, and business associates to cancer over the past
few years, the Yoshida family focused their energy on patient care and preventative medicine by establishing
a non-profit foundation.
Funds generated within the Soulful Giving Foundation have been earmarked for expanded
research, and the care and treatment of cancer patients and their families. Individuals who share in this commitment
have joined forces in forming a dynamic board with event committees fully engaged in organizing fund-raising
activities. Among their supporters and honorable co-chairs are Governor Kitzhaber, Senator Merkley, Senator Wyden,
State Treasurer Ted Wheeler, Jeff Cogen, Multnomah County Commission, Kate Brown, Oregon Secretary of State,
Tom Hughes, Metro Council President, and Dan Staton, Multnomah County Sheriff. |
